Khan el-Khalili
Welcome to Khan el-Khalili, Cairo's legendary bazaar!
More than just a market, this is a vibrant, living tapestry of sights, sounds, and scents, where centuries of tradition meet the hustle and bustle of modern Egyptian life. It's the perfect place to kick off our Cairo adventure, immersing ourselves in the heart of the city's soul.
What to Experience
Prepare to be overwhelmed by the sheer variety of goods on offer, from glittering gold jewelry and intricate carpets to fragrant spices and hand-blown glass. Don't miss the chance to haggle for souvenirs, sip traditional Arabic coffee in a bustling cafe, and soak up the atmosphere of this timeless marketplace. Keep an eye out for the stunning architecture, including the intricate mashrabiya latticework adorning many buildings.
History & Background
Established in 1382 by Sultan al-Azhar Jarkas al-Khalili, this sprawling marketplace replaced the earlier Fatimid cemeteries. It quickly became a major center for trade, attracting merchants from across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Over the centuries, Khan el-Khalili has witnessed countless historical events, from Mamluk power struggles to Ottoman rule and the rise of modern Egypt.
Insider Tip
The bazaar truly comes alive in the late afternoon and evening, but it also gets incredibly crowded. For a slightly less frenetic experience, try visiting around 10:00 AM, shortly after the shops open, when you can still find good deals and avoid the biggest tour groups. Look up and notice the Wikala of Sultan Qalawun, a stunning example of Mamluk architecture often missed by those focused on the shops.
Did You Know?
Legend says that Khan el-Khalili is built on top of a former cemetery, and some believe that the spirits of the deceased still roam the market at night, adding an extra layer of mystique to this already enchanting place!
