Praça do Comércio
Welcome to Praça do Comércio, Lisbon's grandest square and the perfect starting point for our historical journey!
This magnificent plaza, facing the Tagus River, has witnessed centuries of Portuguese history, from royal celebrations to devastating tragedies.
What to Experience
Marvel at the imposing Arco da Rua Augusta, a triumphal arch commemorating Lisbon's reconstruction, and take in the views from the top. Admire the statue of King José I at the center of the square, a powerful symbol of royal authority. Don't miss the symmetrical yellow buildings surrounding the square, once home to government ministries and now housing cafes and shops.
History & Background
Before the devastating 1755 earthquake, this was the site of the Ribeira Palace, the main royal residence. After the earthquake, the Marquis of Pombal redesigned the square as a symbol of Lisbon's resilience and rebirth. Officially completed in 1775, it became a bustling hub for commerce and maritime trade, earning its name 'Commerce Square'.
Insider Tip
For a unique perspective, take a ride on the Lisbon Tram 15E which passes right along the edge of the square. Early morning or late afternoon provides the best light for photographs, and fewer crowds to contend with.
Did You Know?
The two towers on the river side of Praça do Comércio were once used to welcome dignitaries and royalty arriving by sea, showcasing Portugal's maritime power and wealth!
