Tower of Pisa
Welcome to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the accidental masterpiece that has captivated the world for centuries!
More than just a photo-op, this iconic structure is a testament to human ambition, architectural miscalculation, and the enduring power of a good story. Prepare to delve into the history and secrets behind this gravity-defying wonder, right here in the heart of Piazza del Duomo.
What to Experience
Marvel at the Tower's distinctive lean, a result of unstable subsoil that has become its defining characteristic. Admire the intricate marble facade, featuring blind arches and detailed carvings that showcase Romanesque architecture. Take in the panoramic views of Pisa from the top (if you dare!), or simply soak up the atmosphere of Piazza del Duomo, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
History & Background
Construction on the Tower began in 1173, but almost immediately, disaster struck: the soft ground caused it to lean. Work was halted for nearly a century, then resumed with attempts to compensate for the tilt. Despite these efforts, the Tower continued to lean, and was finally completed in the 14th century. Its near-collapse in the 20th century led to extensive engineering work to stabilize it, ensuring its survival for generations to come.
Insider Tip
For the best photos without the crowds, visit the Tower early in the morning, ideally before 9:00 AM when it opens, or later in the afternoon. Look closely at the base of the Tower – you can see where engineers have added counterweights over the years to try and correct the lean!
Did You Know?
Believe it or not, the Leaning Tower of Pisa isn't the only leaning structure in Pisa! Several other buildings in the city also suffer from the same unstable ground conditions, making Pisa a veritable 'Leaning City'.
Walk to Camposanto
4 mins • 0.3 km
Alright adventurers, from here, face away from the Tower of Pisa, towards the grand green space. We'll be heading towards the Baptistery, the large round building to your right. Follow the paved path around the Tower, keeping the green space on your left, until you reach our next stop – a masterpiece of religious architecture.
