Tour Overview
Preview - First Stop ShownWelcome to the Imperial Palace East Garden, a serene oasis in the heart of bustling Tokyo! This was once the site of Edo Castle, the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate, and now offers a captivating glimpse into Japan's feudal past and imperial present.
What to Experience
Explore the meticulously manicured Ninomaru Garden, a classic Japanese landscape garden. Climb the stone walls of the former castle keep for panoramic city views. Don't miss the remnants of the Honmaru, the innermost circle of defense, and imagine the bustling life of Edo Castle within these very walls.
History & Background
Edo Castle was the largest castle in the world, the power base of the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1867. After the Meiji Restoration, the Imperial Family moved here, transforming it into the Imperial Palace. While the inner grounds remain private, the East Garden, opened to the public, allows us to walk in the footsteps of emperors and shoguns.
Insider Tip
Visit on a Tuesday morning, the only weekday it's open, to experience the garden with fewer crowds. Look closely at the stone walls; you can see the different clan crests of the feudal lords who contributed to their construction!
Did You Know?
The East Garden is built on land reclaimed after a devastating fire in 1657. The fire was so intense it’s said to have changed the course of the Sumida River!
