Welcome to the Arena di Verona, a breathtaking Roman amphitheater that has stood the test of time and continues to host spectacular performances.

As our first stop, prepare to be transported back to the age of gladiators and experience the grandeur of ancient Rome right here in the heart of Verona.

What to Experience

Marvel at the Arena's imposing elliptical structure, constructed from pink Verona marble. Imagine the roar of the crowd as you stand where gladiators once fought. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of preparations for an upcoming opera performance, a tradition that began here in 1913.

History & Background

Built in the 1st century AD, around 30 AD, the Arena once held over 30,000 spectators eager to witness gladiatorial contests and public games. Remarkably, it survived a devastating earthquake in 1117, although the outer ring was severely damaged. Today, it's internationally renowned as one of the best-preserved ancient amphitheaters, still in active use after nearly 2000 years.

Insider Tip

For the best photos, visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive, or during the 'golden hour' before sunset when the light beautifully illuminates the pink marble. Look closely at the remaining sections of the outer ring – a testament to the Arena's original scale.

Did You Know?

Believe it or not, the Arena was originally built *outside* the city walls! As Verona grew, it eventually encompassed the amphitheater, making it a central landmark.
